The landscape images in each of the diptych paintings are interpretations of the American western landscape. Most are references from photos taken while hiking, or from old vacation photos. In these landscape side, the central elements are both monolithic and slight. They are alive and dying, centrally framed and created in monochromatic light, drawing on a romance or nostalgia we might attach to this kind place in the American west. The abstractions on the other panel are meant to juxtapose the landscape image, giving it some kind of visual play, hopefully challenging they viewer to question their relationship. I started this series with the chandelier image as a reference to organic structure, dominant culture, and status. It began to grow into other geometric abstractions referencing Indigenous designs and also the ideas behind the modernist movement in painting that views painting as a non-narrative. It’s pretty general statement but it a start at trying to figure these things out for myself. What they mean together as one painting, who knows. I think there is something there though...
