(DDP) drawing and driving project
The Drawing and Driving Project was initially conceived while on a residency at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine during the summer of 2006. The conceptual approach became an important project for me in realizing new ways of working through my process and has been the impetus in the evolution of subsequent works in the last few years.
The Drawing and Driving Project uses velocity and gravity to create a relationship with landscape and the experience of traveling through it. It utilizes performance, drawing, video, painting, and sculpture to explore and document the process of this experience.
The first Drawing and Driving vehicles built were based on a soapbox style design with a fixed easel, seating for one and powered by gravity only. The videos made during the project include documentation of the drawing and driving process from multiple vantage points viewed in a realtime experience between those points. The performance based drawings further engage the realtime experience of travel, landscape and the relationship I have with that landscape, all from the vantage point of a moving vehicle. The drawings and stills from the video developed from this experience also become a starting point for painting.
